How to Bring Esports to Brands
Saturday Dec 17, 2022
Saturday Dec 17, 2022
We have two guests today: Nick Smith and Romain Tixier – Co-founders of GosuRabbit a next gen marketing agency based in the UK. Nick is in the UK and Roman is in Lyon, France.
Our discussion included:
The story of how both Nick and Romain became interested in the business side of esports after a few years of competitive playing.
“One night my dad came downstairs, me playing World of Warcraft, and he said ‘Can you stop what you are doing. We need to talk.’ And he told me ‘Well you are playing video games. Amazing. Good for you. But you need to transform it into something that will help you make a living from it.’ – Romain
They also explain the origin of the unique name for their marketing agency: GosuRabbit.
Both Nick and Romain describe the work done by their agency, focusing on helping brands reach out to new generations and customers using gaming and esports.
The first thing to find out, to understand is ‘what does a brand mean by esports’. They are looking to help brands move away from just wanting to test something new. And the importance of truly understanding what the brand is looking to achieve.
Romain describes how the process involves not only learning more about the brand, but to be able to match up the right esports partner.
A common theme that we hear often on the Gamers Change Lives Podcast is that pitch decks that talk only about the esports team or event and not referencing the brand rarely make a positive impression.
Hear the call to have more marketing people involved in esports, at all levels.
The discussion includes hearing how an esports organization can get people talking about them, and it involves much more than just social media.
How important is winning to the brand?
Listen to how culture and language makes an impact on esports marketing through their agency.
We briefly touch on the Metaverse – what it is and what it isn’t. And their predictions about the future.
And hear their take on whether the Olympics should be including esports into their official program. They have definite opinions on the games that have been selected.

Deep Dive Into Venture Capital Investing in Africa
Saturday Dec 10, 2022
Saturday Dec 10, 2022
Our guest is Mohamed Karar. He is a Venture Partner at Launch Africa, one of the most active early-stage venture capital firms in Africa.
Once Mohamed, talking to us from Cape Town, South Africa, learned what a venture capital partner does, he knew that was perfect for him. After meeting Zachariah George at Launch Africa, he was one of their very first hires.
Even without experience in finance before joining the firm, what made venture capital so appealing to Mohamed? It was his natural curiosity. And his ability to ‘live in the future’.
The Goldman Sach’s approach to hiring transfers extremely well to venture capital, and to startups in general. “They weren’t as concerned about your technical skills, but whether you are someone who can succeed in such an intense environment.”
On whether an early-stage VC is actually investing in the founders more than the concept, Mohamed points out that, “If you are making a startup, the odds are that you are not going to figure it out the first time. It is going to take some humbling along the process.”
Mohamed is a Venture Partner, which means that he is out there actively searching for the next homerun. Once he buys into the potential investment, it goes to the larger team and then to the all-important investment committee. Hear more details on that journey every founder wants to go on.
And where does a venture capital firm get its money? It depends. There are many potential sources for firms and Mohamed explains how Launch Africa is a bit different. You also can hear his interest in how sovereign wealth funds and even governments are becoming more active in all sectors.
The all-important question of what a venture capital firm is looking for in a potential investment is answered. At least for Launch Africa. Hear the checklist of questions in case you are a founder looking for an advantage.
Regulation has a huge impact on investing around the globe. And a founder who has that under control brings a tremendous advantage to the discussion.
At Launch Africa, they are building a community, a portfolio of companies that can help each other. Synergy is alive and well. Learn more about what the VC firm can bring to the founders beyond writing a check.
With the recent investment in media and esports, Launch Africa is looking to expand and diversify their portfolio with strategic opportunities.
Because of his experience across all of Africa, Mohamed talks about the challenges founders in emerging markets face. And the potential opportunities.
And find out what you will receive as a prize if you get to a deal with Mohammed when you mention the Gamers Change Lives Podcast.

Government Support for Youth Through Esports
Saturday Dec 03, 2022
Saturday Dec 03, 2022
Our guest is Soufiane EL FILALI. He is Marketing & Communication Director at La Fédération Royale Marocaine des Jeux Électronique – FRMJE (The Royal Moroccan Federation of Electronic Games)
Our discussion included:
Soufiane describes the journey of establishing the Royal Moroccan Federation of Electronic Games.
The Royal Moroccan Federation of Electronic Games is part of the policy of social, economic, and sporting development inspired by His Majesty King Mohammed VI.
The focus on youth in Morocco at all levels of the government has allowed for an organization that works with many associations throughout the region and country to be created in just a few years’ time.
Training is a large part of the organization’s approach with the support of national teams at the top of the list with inclusion being on of the pillars of support.
Soufiane describes how youth centers across Morocco have been included in the program, where they organize tournaments as well as train players and organizers.
With some justifiable pride he relates that, “Some cities, some regions told us that this is the first time someone has come to us and organize something for us.”
The inclusion of the esports and gaming programs includes creating opportunities for girls and women, and not just boys and men.
Soufiane also notes some of the other countries who are also supporting esports through governmental programs, in the region and around the world. He says that “We want to be one of the best. Why not become the gaming hub for Africa?”
Soufiane and the organization he represents is also working across the African continent, guided by a south/south strategy and gives many reasons why Morocco may be uniquely suited for carrying out this important role.
One of the most important themes of the conversation is focusing on the importance of working with other associations and federations at all levels.
“A professional player is valued today on the job market as a skill capable of leadership, analysis, quick adaptation to the world, challenges related to the metaverse, AI, cryptocurrency.”
And hear Soufiane talk about the challenges and opportunities for the future of esports in his country of Morocco and beyond. His thoughts on working with publishers is also covered.

Community Initiative and Sponsorship Tactics
Saturday Nov 26, 2022
Saturday Nov 26, 2022
We have two guests today: Kieran Sanford. Co-Founder of ForG4MERSake in London, and Baba Dioum, the Manager SOLO Esport in Dakar Senegal.
Our discussion included:
How Kieran and Baba each came to esports from different paths.
They each talk briefly about the state of esports in their home countries, the UK and Senegal.
Baba was recently invited to an esports conference hosted by the Royal Federation of Esports in Morocco in Casablanca. He describes how Morocco is working on the development of esports both in their country and across Africa including highlighting Rabat as “The City of Gaming”.
Kieran, one of the founders of ForG4ERSSake, describes the mission of the organization – “Bringing the Community Together for Gaming” – and how it got started. There was a need for a hub to help get young people off the streets. The organization does just that through events, teams, and venues. Their focus is on how gaming can create career opportunities in more than just content creation.
ForG4MERSSake has developed partnerships with many organizations to help them on their quest, including Barclays. He provides his approach to securing sponsors which revolves around getting out there and talking with everyone.
” Just try to go for it. And do as much as you can to reach out to people. You’re not going to go anywhere just standing there and not trying to be proactive in the market. Just be out there and try to echo your story.”
Baba relates how his organization and approach in Senegal has done much of the same thing, showing that gaming can be a positive influence in many parts of the world.
Baba also talks about his organization SOLO Esport and how they learned that to create a true business it is important to look for different business models to be successful.
Both Kieran and Baba talk about the challenges that esports can face when working with audiences who speak different languages.
Next Kieran talks about how his organization works with influencers. Content creation can be a very lonely place to be. They manage most aspects of the streamer’s career so they can focus on what they do best: create content.
Baba relates the ongoing sponsorship journey for SOLO Esport, including how funding can come from various sources such as banks and the governments of France and Senegal.
And both weigh in on the question of whether the Olympics should include esports in their program in the future.

Connecting Brands with Gen Z Through Esports
Saturday Nov 19, 2022
Saturday Nov 19, 2022
Our guest is Tushaar Garg from India. He is the Founder and CEO @StreamO as well as the Founder and CEO of Irony Esports.
Our discussion included:
Tushaar talks about how large the market is in India, for those playing and those watching video games. Note: it is huge!
From his beginning as a championship tennis player, Tushaar worked in traditional sports with the IPL – the Indian Premier League Cricket. When the pandemic hit, he decided to become an entrepreneur and to explore what the opportunities in esports would bring.
There are a lot of similarities – and differences – between traditional sport and esports. Tushaar describes how esports can learn from sports in how to become better at monetization.
Tushaar founded, and is now the CEO of StreamO, India’s first livestream sponsorship marketplace. They work at the intersection of the passion economy, live streaming, video gaming, and superfans.
As we learn, the younger audience today is consuming live-streaming entertainment content which is more intimate and engaging. As he points out, ‘Strangers are our new best friends’.
StreamO focuses on opening opportunities for brands to access Gen Z, which can be notoriously difficult. In India, Gen Z makes up 27% of the population with a total of over 375 million individuals. 200 million of that group are active on YouTube.
YouTube Is the biggest gaming platform, with some competition from Twitch and Facebook Gaming playing catch up.
Tushaar and the group at StreamO have a twin-fold solution. First creating an opportunity for content creators to earn 10x to 20x that being paid out by Google. And second working with brands who want to attract the Gen Z audience. They realize that communicating with Gen Z needs a very different approach.
They bring their 5,000+ creators and 100 million subscribers to many of the largest global brands. This is especially powerful as many brands are interested in the huge Indian market, but do not always know the best way to enter.
For content creators, StreamO creates a community for them to learn from each other, providing a model of user generated content and networking.
For brands there are four types of gaming which includes competitive gaming (esports). He is especially proud of their work with Intel Gamer Day.
What are brands looking for? He explains that in addition to a basic understanding of the industry, they want to know more about gaming, talent, and tournaments. The brands are also looking for ways to create content in the vernacular – allowing them to reach a much wider audience in a society with so many different languages.
Tushaar and his team launched Stranger Things for Netflix in India. As he describes it, “We got so many messages from young people who just want to show their parents that playing video games is not a waste of time. And that they can actually make money from a brand like Netflix.”
We wrap up the conversation with Tushaar explaining his answer to the question of whether the Olympics should include esports in their program.

Tushaar Garg is the Founder CEO of StreamO, an award-winning creator economy start-up that connects brands with the notoriously hard to reach Gen Z audiences via a new breed of creators (half-athlete - half influencer) who specifically livestream long-form video content to their loyal fans and friends across YouTube Live and Twitch.
StreamO’s clients include Netflix, Amazon Prime, MX Player, One Plus, Crocs, Fastrack, Sony Play Station, Intel, Spotify, and Dell Alienware amongst others.
Previously, Tushaar has been involved with market-maker start-ups in India that have become benchmarks in their respective fields.
In Cricket, he was involved as a founding member in the conceptualization and commercialization of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Tushaar also commercialized India's only ATP Tennis event, and India's first fashion event - the Lakme Fashion Week.

Creating the Ultimate Venue for Games Culture
Saturday Nov 05, 2022
Saturday Nov 05, 2022
Our guest is Jon Satterley from Melbourne Australia. He is CEO & Co-Founder at Fortress Australia.
Our discussion included:
How a passion for heavy metal music and the world of entertainment led to the creation of a cathedral to games culture.
Jon’s career spanning music, entertainment, and video games, including the value of spending 3 years cleaning toilets.
How Jon took his experience as Chief Digital Officer at Village Roadshow to work on creating his games culture enterprise. And decided to create his own opportunity to include his passions in life.
How the arcade experience from the 1980’s could be brought back to life in a modern setting.
Creating Fortress Australia - ‘We are Australia’s number one games culture company.’
Why can’t esports support a venue on its own?
First, the role of the publishers who constrain an organization to scale to a massive size.
Second, the limitations of size for most markets, including Australia.
And third, you have a business model that is at the whims of players that you have little control over. That makes it hard to find investors.
The role of publishers in creating a gaming venue – how to make it work for both parties.
Other sources of revenue that are necessary to make it all work, especially with significant investors.
“We build cathedrals for gamers.” And epic, awe-inspiring, jaw-dropping, walk in and have your head torn off. People are immersed in their culture. And so, they spend money.
The cost of creating venues of this proportion.
The future of Fortress Australia.
How to draft off of other events, both local and international.
The Olympics – should they include esports in their official program?
How traditional sports impact the approach to esports.
